Guangzhou Itinerary: A Complete 3-Day Guide for First-Time Visitors

Guangzhou is in southern China. It is the 5th largest city in China by population and GDP. The city territory is massive, but the city center has a high-density, high-energy feel similar to Manhattan or Singapore. In China, Guangzhou is best known for international trade and Cantonese food.

Guangzhou has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are long, hot, humid, and rainy. Autumn is comfortable but short. Winters are mild, although cold snaps can temporarily drop the temperature. Spring is warm but quite damp.

When to visit:

  • The best season to visit is autumn (mid-October to late November)
  • Winter is the second best choice (December to February)
  • Spring is also okay, but can be very humid (March to May)
  • Try to avoid summer (June to September) and Chinese public holidays

Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN)
Guangzhou only has one airport, about 33 km from the city center.
The airport has 3 terminals:

  • T1 is currently closed for renovation
  • T2 mainly handles domestic flights
  • T3 mainly handles international flights

T2 is directly connected to the metro station on Level B2.
T3 does not have a metro station, but there is a free shuttle bus between T2 and T3. The ride takes about 20 minutes, with buses every 10 minutes.

How to Get from the Airport to the City Center

  • Metro: From T2. About 1 hour. Costs around 7–9 RMB.
  • Ride-hailing (DiDi): Similar price from T2 and T3, around 80–120 RMB. However, because there are many cars and passengers, it can be tricky for drivers to find you. It is less convenient than a regular taxi.
  • Taxi: Very convenient. Usually costs less than 200 RMB, although it is almost twice the price of ride-hailing. If the fare is clearly unreasonable, just pay first, take a photo of the license plate, and ask your hotel front desk for help later. You will most likely get a refund. Scams exist, but they are uncommon.

Watch: From Guangzhou Airport to Hotel by Metro airport

Guangzhou South Railway Station
Guangzhou has 5 large train stations, but Guangzhou South Station is the one tourists use most often.

Getting from Guangzhou South Station to the City Center

  • Metro: 35–50 minutes. About 5 RMB.
  • Ride-hailing (DiDi): Around 50–70 RMB. Same problem as the airport — drivers and passengers often need to call each other to find the pickup point.
  • Taxi: Very easy. Just line up and get in. Usually costs around 80–100 RMB.

Important: Ignore drivers who approach you inside the station. Just follow the signs to the official ride-hailing or taxi pickup area.

Where to Stay in Guangzhou

If convenience is your top priority, staying near Beijing Road is the best choice. For example:
Mercure Guangzhou Beijing Road Pedestrian Street Hotel

  • 4 Stars | Guest Rating: 9.6/10
  • Location: Right next to Beijing Road Pedestrian Street and several shopping malls, with plenty of restaurants nearby.
  • Metro: A 5-minute walk to Beijing Road Metro Station.
  • To Guangzhou Baiyun Airport: Around 50 minutes by ride-hailing (DiDi) (about 90 RMB); by metro, around 1 hour with 1 transfer (8 RMB).
  • To Guangzhou South Railway Station: Around 30 minutes by taxi (about 60 RMB); by metro, around 41 minutes with 1 transfer (5 RMB). Hotel

If budget matters more, I recommend staying near Yuexiu Park. For example:
Puji Hotel (Page Hotel/Guangzhou Beijing Road Yuexiu Park Store)

  • 4 Stars | Guest Rating: 9.4/10
  • Location: The area is quieter. There is a Xinjiang restaurant downstairs, and a famous old Cantonese restaurant called Tao Tao Ju about 200 meters away.
  • Metro: A 5-minute walk to Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall Metro Station.
  • To Guangzhou Baiyun Airport: Around 40 minutes by taxi (about 80 RMB); by metro, around 56 minutes with 1 transfer (7 RMB).
  • To Guangzhou South Railway Station: Around 30 minutes by taxi (about 65 RMB); direct metro access, around 36 minutes (5 RMB). Hotel

If you enjoy visiting shopping malls at night, staying in the Tianhe District is a good choice. For example:
JI Hotel (Guangzhou Tianhe Tiyuxi Road Metro Station)

  • 3 Stars | Guest Rating: 9.5/10
  • Location: Grandview Mall and Parc Central are both within a 10-minute walk, and there are also many restaurants around the hotel.
  • Metro: A 5-minute walk to Tianhenan Station (APM Line) or Tiyuxi Road Station (Line 3).
  • To Guangzhou Baiyun Airport: Around 40 minutes by taxi (about 100 RMB); Metro Line 3 goes directly to T2, around 50 minutes (8 RMB).
  • To Guangzhou South Railway Station: Around 30 minutes by taxi (about 65 RMB); by metro, around 51 minutes with 1 transfer (6 RMB). Hotel

Guangzhou Itinerary & Getting Around

Sample Itinerary

  • Day 1 - Arrive in Guangzhou in the afternoon > Walk around Huacheng Square at sunset > Take a Pearl River Night Cruise or visit Canton Tower at night

  • Day 2 - Visit Shamian Island during the day > Yongqing Fang > Chen Clan Academy if you have time > Go shopping at Beijing Road or the Tianhe District at night

  • Day 3 - Chimelong Safari Park

Map of Guangzhou Attractions:

Getting Around Guangzhou:

  • Ride-hailing (DiDi): The easiest and most convenient option.
  • Metro: Guangzhou Metro is also very reliable and supports contactless credit cards (tap-to-pay).
  • Rush Hour Warning: Avoid traveling between 7:00 AM – 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM – 7:30 PM, as trains and roads become extremely crowded.
Important Safety Warning Be extra careful when crossing streets. There are many electric scooters and motorcycles that often ignore traffic rules. Honestly, most negative reviews about Guangzhou travel on Chinese social media are about the chaotic traffic. Keep your eyes open when walking.

Top Attractions in Guangzhou

Huacheng Square

The largest public square in Guangzhou, sometimes called the city’s “living room.” Nearby, you will find several major landmarks, including the Guangzhou Library, Guangzhou Opera House, and Guangdong Museum. During the daytime, the area is very hot and the scenery is honestly not that impressive. It is much better at night for skyline views.

Hours: Open 24 hours, free entry
Visit Time: 30 minutes – 1 hour
Suggested Walking Route:

  • After sunset, take the APM Line to Huacheng Avenue Station (花城大道, Exit B), or take Metro Line 3 to Zhujiang New Town Station (珠江新城, Exit D).
  • Walk toward Canton Tower, passing Haixinsha Asian Games Park along the way. (The walk to Canton Tower is about 2.5 km and takes around 35 minutes).
  • You can leave from Canton Tower Station (广州塔) via the APM Line or Metro Line 3.

Tip: The closer you get to Canton Tower, the more crowded it becomes. I actually recommend stopping at Haixinsha West Pier instead (海心沙西区码头 about 1.3 km away, or a 20-minute walk), then taking a Pearl River Night Cruise from there.

Getting There:

  • APM Line: Huacheng Avenue Station (花城大道), Exit B
  • Metro Line 3 / Line 5: Zhujiang New Town Station (珠江新城), Exit D

Watch: 广州花城广场全景航拍 Huacheng Square

Pearl River Night Cruise

The Pearl River is the third-longest river in China. The Guangzhou section is about 111 km long and is considered the “mother river” of Guangzhou.

A night cruise is the most relaxing way to see Guangzhou’s skyline. Several companies operate cruises from different piers, but I recommend leaving from Haixinsha West Pier (海心沙西区码头) because it’s conveniently located, has better boats, and is usually less crowded.

Visit Time: About 1 hour
Best Time to Cruise: 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM. After 9:30 PM, many building lights start turning off, so don’t book a slot too late!

Tickets: 90–150 RMB (depending on the seating level), You can book tickets on Trip.com. Popular time slots often sell out on weekends, but you can usually cancel for free up to 2 hours before departure.

Choosing Your Boat:
You can usually choose between three boat types: Zhuangyuanfang, Impression of Etan, and Marquis of Nevernight. They are similarly priced and the facilities are basically the same. Just pick whichever departure time fits your schedule best.

Which Floor Should You Choose?
Most boats have 3 floors—the 1st and 2nd floors are indoors, while the 3rd floor is outdoors.

  • 1st Floor (Cheapest & Best Value): Great if you are on a budget. You don’t have to stay inside the whole time; you can still go up to the 3rd-floor public area to take photos.
  • 2nd Floor (Quieter): Very similar to the 1st floor, but usually less crowded and a bit more peaceful.
  • 3rd Floor (Best Views & Most Expensive): This is the open-air deck. It offers the best views and is a great experience in good weather, but it can get very windy and cold in winter or bad weather.

Getting There:

  • You can easily walk over here after visiting Huacheng Square (as mentioned above).
  • Or, take the APM Line to Haixinsha Station (海心沙). From there, it is just a 3-minute walk. If you are using a map app for navigation, search for 珠江夜游(海心沙西区码头).

Canton Tower

The landmark building of Guangzhou, completed in 2010.
The main tower is 454 meters tall, with an additional 146-meter antenna. It is the tallest observation tower in China and the third-tallest in the world.

Hours: 9:30 AM – 10:30 PM
Tickets: There are several ticket options. I recommend the 460-Meter Bubble Tram Combo, which costs around 298 RMB. (Visitors aged 75+, children under 6, or under 1.2 meters can enter for free).

Visit Time: 1 – 2 hours (depending on queue times)
Suggested Route:

  • Book tickets in advance. Weekend, holiday, and evening slots often sell out. If the weather looks bad, you can usually cancel for free.

  • Canton Tower uses timed entry. About 30 minutes before your entry time, scan your passport at the self-service machines to exchange it for a physical ticket.

  • After entering, take the elevator to Level 107 (428-meter indoor observation deck), then walk up the indoor ramp to Level 108 (433-meter indoor observation deck). Note: The glass reflections here are quite noticeable, and some views are blocked by the tower structure.

  • Next, I recommend walking up the stairs from Level 108 to the 450-meter outdoor observation deck on Level 111. If you have bad knees, you can take the elevator instead, but the line is usually much longer.

  • After visiting the outdoor deck, I strongly recommend lining up for the Bubble Tram. Each cabin holds 6 people, and one ride takes about 20 minutes. During the daytime, the wait is short. Around sunset, the line can become 1–2 hours long, while nighttime queues are usually around 1 hour.

  • This is the world’s highest horizontal Ferris wheel (at 455 meters high). The views here are even better than the outdoor observation deck. The wait can be painful, but if the weather is good, it is absolutely worth it!

Tips:

  • Luggage Storage: You can store your luggage at the ticket hall on the 1st floor.

  • Higher Deck Option: There are also more expensive combo tickets that include access to the highest 488-meter observation deck. Check out this video to see what it looks like before you decide.

  • Eat First: Since you need to queue both for the elevators and the Bubble Tram, I recommend having dinner first if you want to visit at night. There are convenience stores and several restaurants right next to the tower

Getting There: Take Metro Line 3 or the APM Line to Canton Tower Station (广州塔, Exit A).

There is also a separate attraction inside Canton Tower called Landmark α (广州塔阿尔法探索乐园), located between Levels 32 and 58 (188–325 meters above ground). It is not connected to the observation decks and requires a separate ticket.

The price depends on the difficulty of the route. The most challenging route, the Red Line, costs around 688 RMB and features 12 obstacle sections, taking about 40 minutes to an hour to complete. Tickets can be booked onTrip.com.

Shamian Island

Shamian Island used to be a sandbank. In the mid-19th century, it became a British and French concession. The island covers about 0.3 square kilometers (roughly the size of 42 football fields).

The island features over 160 European-style buildings, many of which were former consulates, banks, and government offices, all shaded by huge banyan and camphor trees. It is one of the best places in Guangzhou for walking and photography.

Hours: Open 24 hours, free entry
Visit Time: 1 – 2 hours
Suggested Route & Tips:

  • Most buildings can only be viewed from the outside (no indoor access), although a few have been turned into museums, cafés, or restaurants.
  • Food Recommendations: Try local food at Qiaomeishijia (侨美食家(沙面总店)), a famous historic Cantonese restaurant known for its roast pigeon and char siu (barbecue pork). Or, treat yourself at Jade River Restaurant (白天鹅宾馆·玉堂春暖) inside the White Swan Hotel, which holds 1 Michelin star.

Getting There:

  • Metro: Take Metro Line 1 or Line 6 to Huangsha Station (黄沙, Exit F), then walk for about 5 minutes.
  • Bonus Tip: Yongqing Fang (永庆坊) is only about 1.5 km away, so you can easily combine these two spots on foot (around a 20-minute walk).

Yongqing Fang

Yongqing Fang is nearly 100 years old and used to be just a very ordinary old residential neighborhood in Guangzhou.

Over time, the buildings became run-down, so in 2016, the local government launched a renovation project. Instead of demolishing the area, they kept the original streets and structures, reinforced the buildings, and attracted cultural heritage workshops, creative shops, and cafés. Gradually, it turned into one of Guangzhou’s most popular spots.

Hours: Open 24 hours, free entry
Visit Time: 30 minutes – 1.5 hours
Suggested Route & Highlights:

  • Food: Try local snacks at Yongqing Food Market (永庆食集), or eat authentic Cantonese food at Tao Tao Ju (陶陶居)—both are famous old-brand restaurants.

  • Bruce Lee’s Ancestral Home (李小龙祖居): A property bought by Bruce Lee’s father, where Bruce Lee briefly lived as a child. Inside, you’ll find exhibits about his life, training equipment, and replica movie costumes. (Free entry).

  • Cantonese Opera Museum (粤剧艺术博物馆): A traditional Chinese-style garden complex focused on Cantonese opera culture, featuring free daily performances. (Free entry, Closed on Mondays).

  • Moon Bridge (月亮桥): A beautiful stone arch bridge with warm lights installed underneath. At night, when the water is calm, the reflection forms a perfect full moon—a fantastic photo spot!

Getting There

  • Metro: Take Metro Line 1 or Line 6 to Huangsha Station (黄沙, Exit B), then walk for about 10 minutes.
  • Bonus Itinerary Tips:
    • Shamian Island (沙面岛) is about 1.5 km away (around a 20-minute walk).
    • Chen Clan Academy (陈家祠) is about 2 km away and can also be easily combined into this day trip.

Chimelong Safari Park

One of the top safari parks in Asia, covering about 1.3 square kilometers (around 320 acres). The park has more than 500 animal species and over 20,000 animals. It is easily the best attraction in Guangzhou for family trips.

Featured Animals:

  • Panda Triplets: The world’s only surviving panda triplets.
  • Koala Family: The largest koala population outside Australia (around 60 koalas).
  • White Tiger Family: The world’s largest white tiger population (around 150 white tigers).

Hours: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Tickets: Around 350 RMB for adults, and around 245 RMB for children and seniors. You can book tickets on Trip.com.

Visit Time: Full day
How to Visit:

  • The park has a South Gate and a North Gate. The South Gate is the best entry point if you are using public transit.
  • There is no “best” route inside the park. Just explore freely!
  • Your ticket includes the safari train ride, where you can see free-roaming zebras, antelopes, giraffes, and lions. Note: The line here can get quite long.
  • The cable car is also included. The full loop takes about 30 minutes and gives you fantastic aerial views of the animals.
  • There are plenty of restaurants and snack stands inside the park.

Where to Stay: I highly recommend staying at Chimelong Hotel right next to the park. The hotel is famous for its White Tiger Restaurant, where you can watch white tigers through massive glass walls while eating your breakfast. Book on Trip.com.

Getting There:

  • Ride-Hailing (DiDi): The park is about 20 km from the city center. Taking a DiDi is the easiest option; the ride takes around 30 minutes.
  • Metro: The metro requires multiple transfers and takes about 1 hour. Get off at Hanxi Chimelong Station (汉溪长隆, Exit E), then take the free shuttle bus directly to the South Gate.

If you have extra time, there are several other parks right next to the Safari Park: Chimelong

1. Chimelong International Circus

  • About a 10-minute walk from the South Gate of the Safari Park, with free shuttle buses available.
  • Performances are usually from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM. Many families visit the Safari Park during the day and watch the circus at night.
  • The show mainly focuses on acrobatics. The performances are exciting, though they might not feel super original. It is still a great choice for children who have never seen a circus before.

Optional Stops in Guangzhou

Beijing Road

About 1 km long, Beijing Road is the most popular pedestrian shopping street in Guangzhou for tourists. It is very similar to Wangfujing in Beijing or Nanjing Road in Shanghai, and is best visited at night.

Visit Time: Around 1 hour
Suggested Activities & Highlights

  • Shopping: The most interesting store here is the MINISO flagship store, called Minisoland. There are also regular shopping malls in the area, such as Beijing Road Teemall. Note: If your main goal is heavy shopping, I still recommend the Tianhe District, which is where locals actually go shopping (introduced below).
  • Food: Try Tao Tao Ju (陶陶居), a famous old Cantonese restaurant chain with extremely good reviews, or Da Ge Fan (大鸽饭), a Michelin-recommended restaurant famous for its roast squab (tender young pigeon) dishes.
  • Night View: Right next to the shopping street is Dafo Temple (大佛寺), a beautiful temple with over 1,100 years of history. Entry is free, and the lights turn on between 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM, making it an amazing photo spot!

Getting There

  • Ride-Hailing (DiDi): Simply search for “Dafo Temple (大佛寺)” to reach the busiest part of Beijing Road.
  • Metro: Take Line 6 to Beijing Road Station (北京路, Exit B), or Line 1 to Gongyuanqian Station (公园前, Exit D). After leaving the station, use “大佛寺” for walking navigation (about a 10-minute walk). Beijing Road Map

Important Safety Note: Two Common Scams on Beijing Road
Although Beijing Road is generally very safe, you may still encounter two common tourist scams.

1. The Flower Scam (Targets Couples):
Someone will approach a couple and hand a bouquet of flowers to the woman, claiming it is “free.” The moment she takes it, they will immediately demand payment from the man. The price is usually 10–20 RMB per flower, which is far above market value. If this happens, simply hand the flowers back, or just place them on the ground and walk away. No one will surround or threaten you. The goal of this scam is purely to exploit the man’s social awkwardness to force a sale.

2. The Forced Shoe-Polishing Scam: Young people will suddenly squat down and start polishing your shoes without your permission. You can directly refuse and walk away. Their tactic is similar—they exploit your discomfort. Once they’ve already cleaned a small part of your shoe, you might feel too awkward to say no. Afterward, they will try to sell you a bottle of shoe-cleaning product for around 50 RMB.

The Background: These tricks have existed for 20–30 years. While heavy police crackdowns have made them much less common, they have never completely disappeared. Interestingly, the people doing this are often young workers hired by sketchy sales companies for part-time roles. They are often brainwashed by these companies into believing that this aggressive style of selling not only makes money but also “builds their confidence and communication skills.

Tianhe Shopping District

If you love shopping, you absolutely must visit Guangzhou’s largest commercial hub—the Tianhe Shopping District. This area is packed with multiple massive shopping malls, and the two most distinctive ones are right next to each other:

  • Grandview Mall (正佳广场): A famous, mega-scale shopping complex in Guangzhou. Inside, it uniquely features a rainforest-themed hall, an indoor aquarium, and an ice-and-snow world (separate tickets required). However, opinions about it are quite divided. Some visitors love the wild, unique atmosphere, while others feel it is way too overcrowded, with a layout that feels like a bit of a maze.

  • Parc Central (天环广场): Known for its stunning, futuristic architectural design. It mainly features mid-to-high-end trendy fashion brands, offering a much sleeker and more upscale shopping experience compared to Grandview Mall.

Getting There

  • Metro Option 1 (APM Line): Take the APM Line to Tianhenan Station (天河南), which brings you right out between the two malls.
  • Metro Option 2 (Easiest for Line 1/3): Take Metro Line 1 or Line 3 to Tiyuxi Road Station (体育西路). The station has underground exits that connect directly into the malls.

Chen Clan Academy

“Chen” is one of the most common family names in Guangdong. The Chen Clan Academy was built in the late 19th century through donations from members of the Chen clan. Its original purpose was to provide free housing and meals for all Chen family members who came to Guangzhou to take the imperial examinations (which can be understood as the civil service exams in ancient China).

In the 20th century, after the imperial exam system was abolished, the complex was converted into a school. Today, it is preserved and open to the public as a folk art museum.

For visitors, it offers a great look at classic traditional Cantonese architecture, featuring exquisite wood, stone, and brick carvings. However, if you are not interested in architecture or traditional crafts, you might find the visit less engaging, which is why it is listed as an optional attraction.

Hours: 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM (Closed on Tuesdays)
Tickets: 10 RMB. (In theory, you must reserve and buy tickets via the WeChat mini-program “Guangdong Folk Art Museum 广东民间工艺博物馆” However, many travelers report that international tourists can easily buy tickets on-site at the ticket counter by showing their passport).
Visit Time: 30 minutes – 1 hour
Getting There: Take Metro Line 1 or Line 8 to Chen Clan Academy Station (陈家祠, Exit D or E). From there, it is just a 2–3 minute walk.

Only if You Have Extra Time

The following spots are highly searched on social media, but they might not be worth changing your itinerary for. Visit only if they are on your way

Yuexiu Park

This is the oldest park in Guangzhou, covering about 690,000 square meters (roughly the size of 96 football fields). The park consists of seven connected hills and three artificial lakes.

The park is filled with lush greenery, featuring many rolling hills and walking paths, as well as historical buildings and sculptures. Yuexiu Park is mainly a peaceful spot where local residents come to walk and relax. As a tourist attraction, however, some visitors may find it a bit underwhelming if they are expecting massive, high-energy tourist attractions.

Hours: 6:00 AM – 10:00 PM
Tickets: Free
Visit Time: Around 2 hours
Getting There: Take Metro Line 2 to Yuexiu Park Station (越秀公园, Exit B1).
Watch: Yuexiu Park, Canton | Springtime in Guangzhou Yuexiu Park

Baiyun Mountain

Baiyun Mountain is the closest large mountain area to downtown Guangzhou and is a popular weekend hiking destination for local residents.

However, since the highest peak is only 382 meters above sea level and Guangzhou’s humid climate often reduces visibility, the views are not particularly spectacular. Because of this, it is better suited for visitors who love hiking, or travelers who have plenty of time to spare.

Hours: 6:00 AM – 10:00 PM
Tickets: 5 RMB
Visit Time: Around 4 hours
Suggested Hiking Route:

  • Enter through the South Gate (南门) of Baiyun Mountain.
  • Hike 40 minutes to an hour to the Summit Plaza (山顶广场). (If you want to save your energy, you can take the cable car for 25 RMB).
  • Explore the plaza and grab a meal or some local snacks.
  • Continue hiking for about 30 minutes to Moxing Ridge (摩星岭), the highest peak. (Alternatively, you can take a sightseeing shuttle bus for 10 RMB. Note: Moxing Ridge requires a separate 5 RMB entry fee).
  • Return along the same route after enjoying the views.

Getting There:

  • Ride-Hailing (DiDi): Set your destination as “Baiyun Mountain Scenic Area - South Gate (白云山风景名胜区-南门)”.
  • Metro: Take Metro Line 11 to Yuntai Garden Station (云台花园, Exit C2), then walk for about 10 minutes to reach the South Gate.
